Artwork Size: 12×18, Medium: Mixed Media, Location Depicted in Artwork: AR, Artist Statement: Photos of settlers in the Arkansas Territory peer back at the viewer through a haziness that envelopes them.?The settlers and their landscapes are black and white, to convey the often austere circumstances with which they were dealt.?Colorful stitching is added to the composition in a quilt pattern called Arkansas Crossroads. The stitching unifies the work, similar to the way quilting bees created friendships, and promoted a sense of community and unity among women settlers, while they created quilts to keep their families warm.?
