Once known as the Bear State, black bears were a valuable commodity in the early development of Arkansas’ settlement. The high demand for bear meat, fur and fat lead to the near-extermination of these magnificent animals.? Successful re-introduction and management programs by the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission are responsible for returning these beautiful symbols of the Natural State to healthy, huntable populations.
