Description
Artwork Size: 30×30, Medium: Oil on Canvas, Location Depicted in Artwork: Biscoe, AR, Artist Statement: The Ivory Billed Woodpecker, the largest in the United States, was described in great detail by John James Audubon who visited Arkansas in 1820 and 1822. Depletion of its woodland habitat, combined with killing for use of the bill and carmine crest for ornamental use, led to its near extinction status. The last reported sighting was in the Cache River National Refuge in eastern Arkansas in 2005, but many hold out hope for its survival.
