Artwork Size: 24×18, Medium: Oil, Location Depicted in Artwork: OK, Artist Statement: Education became an important objective for the Native American tribes in the early Arkansas Territory, and a pocket watch award would be worn as a sign of status and accomplishment. Boarding schools were established and run by missionaries who tried to ‘civilize’ the young students. The schools were later assumed by the tribes and run by educated tribal members who recognized the need to respect tribal ways.
