Description
Artwork Size: 16×20, Medium: Oil, Location Depicted in Artwork: Lawton, OK, Artist Statement: In 1819, the native North American Bison were plentiful in the Wichita Mountains in the Arkansas Territory. By 1876 they were declared extinct. Fifteen bison from the New York Zoological Park were re-introduced to the Wichita Mountains in 1907 as Oklahoma became a state. This effort is responsible for an opportunity for visitors to this area to be transported back to a bygone era; to once again see these great animals roaming free. The reference photo of a young bull, ‘Prince of the Prairie’, was taken by me during a visit to the Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge.
